I was raised with a love for horseback riding and driving horses. As a youngster, I participated in dressage, hunter jumper, and combined training. I attended numerous clinics where I learned techniques for training horses holistically. My father also had a passion for driving horses, and he taught me how to use draft horses and agriculture together. We showed draft horses and successfully competed in a range of disciplines.
In addition to horses, I also work with mules and was lucky to attend Doc Hamill clinics. As I developed my skills, I started earning a living as a driving clinician specializing in single driving and training the pulling horse. I still use driving to start horses and give them a well-balanced education.
Throughout my career as a clinician, professional driver, and rider, I have been involved in all stages of the training process. I use my horsemanship skills and common sense to train Harvey Horses. Training a horse means I take my time meeting horses and mules where they are and only introduce new challenges when they are ready.
After I had my daughter, I developed a love for trail riding. Our trails got longer as my daughter grew, and her horses went from ponies to full-sized horses. We began camping in the mountains all over New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Arizona. We used the horse trailer as a base camp, staying overnight in remote areas. We stayed on the trail many nights, hobbling the horses and building a fire to sleep by. We also competed in NATRC (competitive trail rides), and our horses consistently did well, finishing with high scores and moving up to the Open Division.
Although we enjoyed the NATRC rides, I wanted a more difficult challenge for my horses. So I invested in a pack saddle, and the high-country mountain adventures began! I confidently ride over 75 miles alone with my draft mare, Wilma, using horses and mules as my pack animals.
Some of the world's most beautiful and dangerous mountains, the San Juan Mountains and the Weminuche Wilderness of Colorado, are a short drive away. Riding through these mountains with a horse requires navigating the trail with other trail runners, hikers, backpackers, mountain bikes, trail runners, dirt bikes, and side by side. With these challenges, you can trust a Harvey Horse with their training and skills to remain calm and obedient.
